What and WhyEver since A Realm Reborn came out three years back, I've been thinking about what other jobs and classes I could see in the mix. Also, I was bothered that only the Arcanist class split to two different jobs.
It seemed obvious to me, given the lore, that Conjurer, for instance, should lead to Geomancer. And aesthetically, Marauder should probably change to some job that doesn't involve protecting people. Lots of other fans have made mock-ups of jobs they want. Some of them are brilliant, and some of them are half-baked. I'm trying to take the best mechanics that make FFXIV wonderful, pervert and subvert them just a little, and add a lot of variety and content without breaking the system (too much). I am also using some spell and ability names from FFXI and FFT for flavor. Conceptually, any borrowed nomenclature has been adapted in the hopes that it can blend well with FFXIV's battle system. One big goal was to give players more customization options. The current cross-class system feels like an unnecessary hold-over from 1.0. But it's still useful! I see the current cross-class bit in the vanilla game as sorely under-utilized. For instance, no jobs can cross-class Rogue abilities? A tiny bit of retcon is all that's needed. To that end, I've tweaked which abilities are cross-classable, hopefully without ruffling too many feathers, to try and make each base class's cross-classed offerings a functional unit - a building block for crafting a cross-class repertoire for each job. The current Tank/Healer/DPS paradigm is solid, but a wee bit pigeonholey. So I'm going absolutely whacky with some of my tank and healer concepts. Lastly, the choice to introduce the three Heavensward jobs without base classes was intrepid and fresh. However, it prevents some very useful abilities from being cross-classed. So I'm just reimagining them a touch, just to see what it would be like if they each had base classes. Moreover, vanilla Dark Knight, Machinist, and Astrologian do not feel optimized for level 50 content, so the homebrew versions are designed with level 50 content in mind. In short, I love Final Fantasy XIV. It's streamlined without being boring. It's beautiful without cramping up my hardware. The characters and the world are fantastic. This project is basically my wish list, because this game is so close to perfect. PlagiarismI stole a lot of art from the internet. If you see art that you made, please let me know if you would like to be credited for it or if you would like me to remove it. I will comply as quickly as I am able.
Even with the best lighting and the coolest clothes, I am not a graphic artist. All of the action icons for new classes and jobs are palette swaps of Square-Enix artistic property. As far as intellectual property goes, this project actually took a bit of time and I'm kind of proud of the results. Please at least give me a shout out if you riff on any of the ideas I'm presenting here. Internet WebsitesHow do they work? I'm not very good at them. Are you good at CSS and/or have a lot of free time to offer to this project for free? Let's make this site look better and not be crammed with unnecessary Javascript from Weebly.
